Why doesn’t the Prime Minister hoist the National flag on Republic Day?
Why doesn’t the Prime Minister hoist the flag on Republic Day? Tomorrow is Republic Day. Tomorrow marks the 76th Republic Day. Every year on January 26, Republic Day is celebrated with much pomp and display across India. This day is commemorated with much pomp and display in Delhi’s streets. The national flag is hoisted at various places and the Triranga flies on every street. Normally, the President hoists the flag on this day. But why does the Prime Minister not hoist the flag? Do you know why it happens?
It is on the strength of such factors that he is permitted to hoist the national flag on 26th January as the head of the Constitution, as Supreme Commander of the Defence forces, and the country’s First Citizen. He represents the Indian Republic. Therefore, this Republic Day would signify the advent of republics into the nation. Therefore, the major events of this day are initiated by the President. Except for that, it is also a ritual and it is stated in the Constitution that the President will unfurl the flag on this day. So, this right is not given to the Prime Minister to hoist the flag on this day.
In fact, the Prime Minister acts as the country’s executive head and head of government. Though he is a participant in the Republic Day celebrations and is present on the parade, the President still remains the central figure on that day. On Independence Day (15 August), the Prime Minister hoists the flag from the Red Fort and addresses the nation. His role is much more important then.
