There is always a dispute over who takes the first bath at the Mahakumbh. There is even a fierce fight between Naga saints and Bairagi saints. In the year 1760, hundreds of Bairagi saints lost their lives in a fight over this issue. Then in 1788, a similar situation was seen. After Mahant Baba Ram Das complained about this, separate ghats were arranged for Naga and Bairagi saints. After this, there was a controversy about the first bath in Haridwar and Prayag. However, Naga saints were declared to have the first bath during British rule. Since then, this tradition has been followed.
According to the Puranas, the oceans churned as Gods and devils fought to secure the nectar pot. That time, it rained nectar droplets in four Prayagraj, Ujjain, Haridwar, and Nashik places. After that began the Mahakumbh Mela here. Since Naga saints are the followers of Lord Shiva, they first bathe for meditation and penance. According to this tradition prevailing since then, Naga saints are the first to bathe in the drops of nectar.
