Who is Kiran Bedi – You must have heard the name of Kiran Bedi, the one who used to give a tough time to criminals in police uniform. Even though she has retired, her work as an IPS is still remembered. So you must have got your answer. Yes, Kiran Bedi is the first female IPS officer of the country. Let us know about her life in detail.
Kiran Bedi was born on 9 June 1949 in Amritsar, Punjab to a Punjabi family. Her father Prakash Lal Peshawari was a tennis player and her mother’s name was Prem Lata. Bedi was raised in a house where both Hindu and Sikh traditions were followed. Her family was from Peshawar, but in 1860, Bedi’s great- grandfather Lala Hargobind Peshawari moved from Peshawar to Amritsar.

How educated is Kiran Bedi- Talking about Kiran Bedi’s education, she received her primary education from Sacred Heart Convent School in Amritsar. During this time, she also participated in the National Cadet Corps (NCC). After this, Bedi received a Bachelor’s degree in English from the Government Women’s College in Amritsar in 1968. In the same year, she also won the NCC Cadet Officer Award. After Bachelor’s, Kiran completed her Master’s in Political Science from Punjab University in Chandigarh.
After completing her masters, Bedi taught as a lecturer at Khalsa College for Women in Amritsar from 1970 to 1972. But her qualifications were not limited to just MA, rather during her career in the Indian Police Service, she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the Faculty of Law, Delhi University in 1988 and then a PhD from the Department of Social Sciences, IIT Delhi in 1993.

When did she join the Indian Police Service ?
Kiran Bedi joined the Indian Police Service in 1972. She was only 23 years old then. With this, she became the first woman in India to join the officer ranks of the Indian Police Service (IPS). When she started her training at the National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie on 16 July 1972 , she was the only female IPS officer among 80 male police officers there.
She got her first posting in 1975 in Chanakyapuri subdivision of Delhi (Kiran Bedi First Posting). During her career, she served in states like Delhi, Goa, Chandigarh and Mizoram. After serving as an IPS for nearly 35 years, she voluntarily resigned from the post of Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development in 2007 to focus on social activism and writing.
