World Pakhala Diwas: Odisha Celebrates Its Traditional Food; Pakhal’ has a special significance among the food items of the Odia community. Although Pakhal is eaten throughout the year, its usefulness increases even more in the summer season. It is eaten with great relish in a bronze vessel. ‘Pakhal Day’ is celebrated every year on March 20. Now this dish has moved from the kitchens of the villages to big restaurants and hotels.

Pakhal, which is also called Pani Bhaat, is eaten with potato bharta, tomato chutney, badi powder, greens, omelette, or fish fry, and various types of fish curry. Also, bitter gourd chips, pickles, and chutney enhance its taste. Apart from this, people also eat pakoras made of pumpkin flowers with great pleasure.

This is how Pakhal is made:

Odisha has a unique and traditional way of preparing Pakhal Bhaat. The cooked rice is left soaked in water, which makes it slightly fermented. The next day, when it becomes slightly sour, it is ready as ‘Pakhal Bhaat’. It is considered easily digestible and nutritious in the hot and humid weather.

With the aim of preserving the culture of traditional food, the Odia community celebrates March 20 as ‘Pakhal Diwas’. It was started in 2015 by some Odia people to promote their traditional food around the world. Now, this day is celebrated by the Odia community globally.

During summer, people of the Odia community eat Pakhal Bhaat. This is a special dish of the Odia culture, which is considered easily digestible and nutritious.
