Bangladesh: 29-Year-Old Man Killed in Mob Violence in Rajbari District, Police Detain One Suspect
Another Hindu Killed in Bangladesh as Mob Violence Claims Life of Young Man: A 29-year-old man, identified as Amrit Mandal, was killed in an incident of mob violence in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district late on Wednesday night, raising renewed concerns over the growing number of such incidents in the country.
According to police officials, the incident took place around 11 pm in the Pangsa sub-district, located nearly three and a half hours from the capital, Dhaka. Mandal, a local resident, died after being attacked by a group of people following a dispute that escalated into violence.
Police said the incident was triggered after a complaint related to extortion was filed, which led to heightened tensions in the area. Authorities added that Amrit Mandal was listed in police records as the leader of a local gang known as “Samrat Bahini.” Some reports have also described him as a Hindu community leader, though officials have not formally confirmed this characterization.
According to preliminary findings, members of the mob justified their actions by alleging that Mandal had been involved in extortion and other criminal activities for a prolonged period. However, police emphasized that such allegations do not justify mob justice and that the matter should have been addressed through legal channels.
In connection with the case, police have taken one youth, identified as Salim, into custody for questioning. An investigation is currently underway to identify others involved in the incident and to establish the sequence of events leading to Mandal’s death.
The killing comes amid growing concern over the rise in mob violence incidents across Bangladesh. Law enforcement agencies have reiterated their warning against taking the law into one’s own hands and have assured that those responsible will be held accountable under the law.
