India Blocks 242 Illegal Betting Websites; Over 8,000 Sites Shut Since Online Gaming Act Passed: The central government of India has blocked 242 illegal betting and gambling website links today, taking the total number of such websites shut down to over 8,000. Government sources told ANI on Friday that the crackdown has gained momentum following the passage of the Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Act, 2025.

The Online Gaming Act, which received presidential assent from Droupadi Murmu in August last year, aims to promote e-sports and social online games while banning harmful forms of gambling, their promotion, and related financial transactions. Notably, players participating in gambling activities will not face punishment; the law targets service providers, advertisers, promoters, and financiers of illegal platforms.

Major Strike Against Illegal Gambling: 242 Websites Closed Nationwide

Government officials said the latest round of website blocks highlights the administration’s commitment to protecting users, particularly young people, from the financial and social harms caused by illegal online betting and gambling platforms.

The new regulations came into effect on October 1, 2025, and since then, authorities have steadily intensified enforcement. Officials emphasized that these actions demonstrate the government’s dedication to safe and regulated online gaming, while preventing the proliferation of unregulated and harmful gambling platforms.
