Madras High Court Reserves Verdict on CBFC Appeal Against ‘U/A’ Certificate for Vijay’s Jana Nayakan: The Madras High Court on January 20 reserved its verdict on an appeal filed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) challenging a single judge’s order granting a ‘U/A’ certificate to actor Vijay’s film Jana Nayakan. With no fresh hearing date announced, the decision has effectively put the film’s release on hold, quashing rumors that it would hit theatres on January 26.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan heard the appeal during a day-long session. The bench reserved its judgment after considering arguments from both sides, leaving the future of the film uncertain despite earlier judicial directions.
The appeal stems from the CBFC’s challenge to a January 9 order by a single judge of the High Court, which had directed the certification body to grant a censor certificate to Jana Nayakan. The CBFC subsequently moved the division bench, arguing against the single judge’s decision.
Earlier, the division bench had stayed the single judge’s order after hearing submissions from Additional Solicitor General A.R.L. Sundaresan and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared via video conferencing on behalf of the CBFC and outlined the grounds for appeal.
Jana Nayakan, touted as Vijay’s final film before his full-time entry into politics, was originally scheduled for release on January 9. However, the release was stalled after the CBFC refused to certify the film, prompting the producers to approach the High Court.
With the verdict now reserved, the film remains in limbo, and its theatrical release will depend on the High Court’s final decision on the certification dispute.
