Former BCCI President Anurag Thakur Gets Supreme Court Relief in Lodha Case
Anurag Thakur Cleared to Rejoin BCCI Affairs After Supreme Court Relief: In a significant development in Indian cricket administration, the Supreme Court has lifted the ban imposed on former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Anurag Thakur, allowing him to participate once again in the board’s affairs.
The apex court amended its January 2017 order that had barred Thakur from being involved in any BCCI-related activities. The earlier directive had removed him from the post of BCCI President and restrained him from attending meetings or taking part in the board’s functioning.
The case dates back to 2017, when the Supreme Court took strict action against Anurag Thakur for failing to implement the Lodha Committee recommendations, which were aimed at reforming the governance structure of the BCCI. Along with his removal, contempt and perjury proceedings were also initiated against him, though he was granted partial relief later that year.
In his petition seeking a revision of the order, Thakur argued that the 2017 ban was imposed without giving him a proper hearing. Accepting this contention, the Supreme Court modified its earlier ruling and clarified that Thakur is now free to participate in the BCCI’s work, meetings, and other activities, subject to the board’s rules and regulations.
The court’s decision effectively brings an end to the long-standing prohibition and fully lifts the restrictions on Thakur’s involvement with the BCCI.
Anurag Thakur, a BJP Member of Parliament from Himachal Pradesh and former Union Minister, became the BCCI President in 2016. The latest ruling is being seen as a major relief for him and could have implications for the future dynamics of cricket administration in India.
