Massive Suicide Blast at Shia Imambargah in Islamabad, 69 Killed; Emergency Declared in Hospitals: A massive explosion struck a Shia Imambargah in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad on Friday, killing at least 69 people and injuring more than 169, according to initial media reports. Official confirmation of the death toll is still awaited.
The blast occurred at the Tarlai Imambargah in the Shahzad Town area during Friday prayers, when a large number of worshippers were present. Authorities said the explosion was caused by a suicide attacker.
The impact of the blast was devastating. Eyewitness accounts and visuals from the site show extensive destruction, with the mosque’s gate severely damaged and windows of nearby buildings shattered. Debris was scattered across the surrounding area, and several victims were reportedly torn apart by the force of the explosion.
Emergency Declared in Hospitals
Following the attack, an emergency was declared at major hospitals in the federal capital, including Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Polyclinic Hospital, and CDA Hospital. The emergency was announced on the instructions of the Executive Director of PIMS, Pakistani media reported.
Police, security agencies, and Rescue 1122 teams rushed to the scene and began rescue and relief operations. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals, many of them said to be in critical condition.
Another Major Attack in Islamabad
This is the second major bombing in Islamabad in less than three months. On November 11, 2025, a suicide bombing outside a District and Sessions Court building in the G-11 area killed 12 people and injured more than 30.
Prime Minister Condemns Attack
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the suicide attack at the Shia mosque. He expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
Security has been tightened across Islamabad following the attack, while investigations are underway to identify those responsible.
