Netflix Film ‘Ghuskhor Pandit’ Faces Legal Trouble Over Alleged Hurt Sentiments
UP Police Register FIR Against ‘Ghuskhor Pandit’ Makers After CM Yogi’s Orders: An FIR has been registered against the director and team of Manoj Bajpayee–starrer ‘Ghuskhor Pandit’ following instructions from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The complaint was lodged at Hazratganj police station in Lucknow, alleging that the film attempts to hurt religious and caste sentiments and could disturb social harmony. The film is slated for release on OTT platform Netflix.
According to a press note issued by the Lucknow Police Commissionerate, the FIR has been filed after objections were raised over the film’s teaser and title. Police said the title allegedly targets and insults a specific community, particularly the Brahmin community, leading to widespread anger among social and religious organizations. Authorities stated that strict action will be taken against anyone found hurting community sentiments or disrupting peace.
UP Police Act After Protests, Case Registered Over ‘Ghuskhor Pandit’
The controversy erupted earlier this month after the teaser of ‘Ghuskhor Pandit’ was released during Netflix’s ‘Next on Netflix’ event. Several organizations demanded a ban on the film, claiming the title defamed the Brahmin community. Saints from the Braj region also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to ban the film and alleging misuse of freedom of expression. Police noted that threats of protests were also received, prompting legal action.
Producer Neeraj Pandey issued a clarification, stating that the film is a fictional cop drama and that the word “Pandit” is used only as a colloquial nickname for a fictional character. He said the story focuses on the actions of one individual and does not comment on any caste, religion, or community. Acknowledging that the title may have offended some viewers, Pandey announced that promotional material has been removed and urged audiences to watch the film in full before forming opinions. The film is directed by Ritesh Shah and stars Manoj Bajpayee, Nusrat Bharucha, Saqib Saleem, Akshay Oberoi, and Divya Dutta.
