Abolish The 5% Quota For Muslims: The Maharashtra government has completely abolished the 5% reservation provided to the socially and educationally backward Muslim community. After the government’s latest decision, this category will no longer get any benefits. This reservation was given to the socially and educationally backward Muslim community of the state in 2014.
Although this reservation was withdrawn earlier, some procedures and administrative orders related to it were considered effective. Now the government has withdrawn all those procedures as well. According to the government order, admission to colleges and other educational institutions on the basis of this reservation will no longer be given. No new caste certificate or legal certificate will be issued under this category. All the orders and government circulars issued earlier will now be considered illegal.
Along with this, the Deputy Secretary of the Maharashtra Minorities Department, Milind Senoy, has also been transferred. According to government sources, no pending or ongoing proceedings based on the 2014 decision will continue. It will be considered as completed. In July 2014, an ordinance was passed to provide reservation to Muslims in government jobs and educational institutions. However, this ordinance was challenged in the Bombay High Court. A stay order was issued within four months. As the ordinance did not become an act by December 23, 2014, it automatically became ineffective.
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) state president Imtiaz Jaleel has criticised the government’s decision and slammed it. Imtiaz Jaleel posted on his social media handle, X, and wrote, “The Maharashtra government has announced the abolition of reservation by giving a Ramzan gift to Muslims. The High Court had imposed this on the grounds that the dropout rate among Muslims was more than half the highest. Despite this, the government has abolished reservation for Muslims. After such a move, can we ask our sons and daughters not to drop out of school? The government’s slogan of Padhega India to Badhega India will no longer be reasonable,” he said.
