West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose Resigns: RN Ravi To Take Over: In a sudden political development ahead of the upcoming state elections, C. V. Ananda Bose resigned as the Governor of West Bengal on Thursday.
Bose submitted his resignation to the President while he was in New Delhi, bringing an end to his tenure of nearly three years and five months. He had been appointed to the position after Jagdeep Dhankhar moved to the Vice President’s office.
Following his resignation, the Centre announced a reshuffle of gubernatorial responsibilities. R. N. Ravi, who had been serving as Governor of Tamil Nadu, has now been appointed as the new Governor of West Bengal. Meanwhile, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, the current Governor of Kerala, has been given the additional responsibility of Governor of Tamil Nadu.
Speaking briefly to reporters after stepping down, Bose said he had spent a significant amount of time in the governor’s office and had fulfilled his responsibilities during his tenure.
Political Reactions
The sudden resignation has sparked strong reactions in the state. Mamata Banerjee expressed surprise and concern over the development.
Banerjee said she was “shocked and very upset” by the sudden resignation and added that she was not aware of the reasons behind the decision. She also suggested that political pressure from the Centre could be involved, especially with the West Bengal Assembly elections approaching.
According to her statement, Amit Shah informed her that R. N. Ravi would be appointed as the new governor. Banerjee criticized the decision-making process, saying she had not been consulted.
She argued that such actions undermine the spirit of India’s federal structure and called on the central government to respect the principles of cooperative federalism.
R.N. Ravi’s Controversial Tenure in Tamil Nadu
The appointment of R. N. Ravi as West Bengal’s new governor has also drawn attention due to his previous tenure in Tamil Nadu, where he frequently clashed with Chief Minister M. K. Stalin.
Their disagreements over governance issues often made headlines. At one point, Stalin and several ministers even skipped an official event hosted at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai, highlighting the strained relationship between the state government and the governor.
Before entering constitutional roles, Ravi served as a senior officer in the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Intelligence Bureau.
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Also Resigns
In another significant development, Kavinder Gupta resigned from his post as Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, ending a nine-month tenure that began in July 2025.
Gupta’s tenure coincided with growing regional pressure and protests from groups such as the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance. These organizations have been demanding full statehood, constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule, and job reservations for local residents.
With major political developments unfolding across several regions, the latest resignations and appointments have added a new layer of complexity to India’s political landscape.
