CM Siddaramaiah Announces Move to Restrict Social Media for Kids
Karnataka Government Plans Social Media Ban for Children Under 16: In a move aimed at protecting young minds from the growing impact of digital addiction, the Government of Karnataka has announced plans to restrict social media use for children under the age of 16.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah made the announcement while presenting the state budget on March 6, 2026. He said the decision was taken after increasing concerns about the effects of excessive smartphone usage on children’s mental health, education, and physical activity.
According to the Chief Minister, the rapid rise in mobile phone usage among children has led to worrying trends such as screen addiction, online gaming habits, and reduced outdoor activity.
Last month, Siddaramaiah raised the issue during a Vice-Chancellors’ Conference held in Bengaluru. During the meeting, he sought the views of education leaders and experts on how social media and smartphones are influencing students. He expressed concern that many children are spending long hours online, which is affecting their concentration in studies and reducing physical fitness. The government believes that stronger regulations may help bring a healthier balance between technology use and children’s overall development.
Government Considering Technology Solutions
Earlier this year, Karnataka’s Information Technology and Biotechnology Minister Priyank Kharge informed the state assembly that the government is exploring possible measures to regulate social media use among young people.
He also mentioned that authorities are studying how Artificial Intelligence could be used to create systems that monitor or restrict access for underage users, ensuring a safer digital environment.
