KYC Will Be Mandatory For Social Media Platforms : KYC for Social Media Users: “Know Your Customer” (KYC) verification process may soon be mandatory for various social media platforms used in the country. A parliamentary committee has made such a recommendation for the protection of women and minors in the country. It is worth mentioning here that discussions have been going on in the country for a long time to keep minors away from social media platforms. The parliamentary committee has submitted this important recommendation to the Union Home Ministry and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

According to the parliamentary committee proposal, a KYC (Know Your Customer) based user verification system should be implemented for the use of social media platforms, dating apps and gaming platforms. This recommendation is part of the report submitted by the Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women on the subject of “Cyber Crime and Safety of Women”. The committee has made strict recommendations . A parliamentary committee has emphasized that mandatory background checks should be implemented on all digital platforms to prevent problems like fake social media profiles and anonymous harassment. The committee report has recommended that social media companies should regularly check the recovery of users. Special attention should be paid to accounts that receive repeated complaints.
Rules to be implemented for dating-gaming apps In addition, strict licensing rules and age verification system have been asked to be implemented for dating-gaming apps to protect women or minors from fraud or exploitation. It has been proposed to impose heavy fines for platforms violating these rules. The parliamentary committee report has shown how various types of cyber crimes, online harassment and promoting the transmission of private photos without consent are increasing due to fake accounts. According to the report , incidents of criticizing or trolling someone or hiding one’s identity on social media have become common. To prevent this, there is a need to establish a system of verification of complaints like KWASI and similar. Although this measure will prevent misuse of digital platforms and facilitate the process of identity verification, it is also likely to raise debates about privacy and protection of personal data.
