He had already informed King Charles III of his decision. The 63-year-old said he will remain in post until a new PM is elected. In an emotional speech, he said, ‘When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job—being the best husband to my wife Victoria. I thank her for being a rock by my side in good and bad times. And being the best dad spend time with my beautiful children who are my pride and joy.’ I will give my successor full support, he said.
Starmer’s resignation comes at a time of growing discontent within the Labor Party about his leadership. Out of the 400 MPs of the Labor Party, more than 100 MPs had opened a front against their own government. The MPs said that either Starmer should immediately resign as Prime Minister or set a date for his resignation.
Starmer will be the fifth prime minister in the past 10 years to step down before the end of his term. Earlier, David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss had resigned from the post of PM.
