Odisha government approves 25% bonus for kendu leaf pluckers: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday announced a welfare package of Rs 74.78 crore for people engaged in kendu leaf sector. This decision will benefit thousands of families whose primary income comes from kendu leaf plucking.

According to a statement by the CMO, the move aims to provide financial support to pluckers, binders and seasonal employees across the state. The package includes a 10 paise hike per ‘kerry’(20 leaves) and a 20 paise hike per ‘phala’(40 leaves), with the price revision costing the state Rs 10.78 crore. The CM also approved a 25 per cent bonus for kendu leaf pluckers and a 5 per cent incentive amount for binders and seasonal staff associated with the trade.The Odisha government will spend additional Rs 64 crore on these benefits.

Kendu leaves in Odisha are an important forest produce and natural resource. It is a major livelihood source for rural and tribal communities in several districts of the state. Kendu leaves are popularly known as the ‘Green Gold’ of Odisha.
