Government Brings New Bill to Curb Paper Leaks
Centre to Introduce Tougher Anti-Paper Leak Bill: The Central government is set to introduce the Public Examinations Amendment Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha on Monday, July 27. The Proposed law aims to strengthen action against question paper leaks by introducing stricter punishments and faster trials.
Under the bill, every state will have fast-track courts to handle paper leak cases, and investigations must be completed within two months. Those found guilty of leaking question papers or using unfair means could face 5 to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to ₹50 lakh. In cases involving organised crime, the punishment could be at least seven years in prison along with a fine of up to ₹10 crore.
The existing law provides a jail term of 3 to 5 years for individual offenders and 5 to 10 years for organised paper leak rackets. The new bill also covers offences such as OMR sheet tampering, fake admit cards, and fake examination websites.
The move comes after the NEET paper leak controversy, which led to widespread protests and disruptions during the monsoon session of Parliament. The government has given priority to the bill, and it is expected to be introduced and taken up for passage on Monday.
