Avoid These Things During Chaturmas to please Lord Vishnu: In Sanatana Dharma ‘Chaturmas’ is considered to have special religious significance. Chaturmas is a holy four-month period that emphasizes spiritual discipline, austerity, fasting, and devotion. It starts on Devshayani Ekadashi and concludes on Devuthani Ekadashi.

Chaturmas starts from Shukla Ekadashi of Ashadha month every year. During this time Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of the world, is believed to enter Yoga Nidra. During these 4 months all manglik activities are forbidden. Therefore Chaturmas is considered very auspicious for worshiping God, chanting, penance, fasting and charity to attain special grace of lord Vishnu.

What should not be done in Chaturmas?

Tamasik food: A Sattvik diet is recommended during Chaturmas. Devotees should abstain from meat, fish, egg, chicken, onion, and garlic throughout the observance. Alcohol and any kind of intoxication should be avoided during this time.

Negative Thoughts: Bhajans and meditation with a sincere heart during this time is considered fruitful. Negative emotions, anger and boasting should be avoided. During this time one should not do any kind of torture or violence to any creature. Try to remain loving towards everyone.

Marriage and Engagement: It is forbidden to perform auspicious rituals like marriage or engagement during this period. Apart from this one should not do things like house entry or Bhoomi Poojan and laying the foundation. One should also try to avoid long journey during Chaturmas.

Mundan and Janeu: Mundan or Upanayan rituals of children are also avoided.

Starting a new business: One should avoid starting any new business or big new work.

During Chaturmas, one should donate food, clothes, water, umbrellas, sesame seeds and shoes to the poor people or to the temple. Also feed the cows with green fodder. It is believed that by donating these things one gets good health, prosperity and peace in life.
