CWG 2026: Para shot putter Sharmila Dhankhar wins gold, Gyaneswari, Bindiarani shine in weightlifting: It was a brilliant day for India in Glasgow on Monday, where Indian athletes bagged a total of 6 medals (1 Gold, 3 silver, and 2 Bronze). With this, India’s total number of medals has increased to 10.
In the women’s para shot put F57 event, Sharmila Dhankhar won the gold medal, and Shilpa’s Shayla bagged the bronze medal in the same event. Apart from this, in weightlifting, Gyaneswari Yadav (53 kg) and Valluri Ajay Babu (79 kg) won silver medals, while Bindyarani Devi (58 kg) won a bronze medal. At the same time, Sarvesh Anil Kushare won a silver medal for India in the men’s high jump competition.
The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games 2026 is being held in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. Sharmila Dhankhar won India’s second gold of this edition on the fifth day on Monday. Young weightlifter Valluri Ajay Babu fought hard for the gold in the 79 kg category, but in the end he missed the gold medal by a margin of 1 kg and had to settle for the silver medal. Ajay Babu lifted 149 kg in snatch and 181 kg in clean and jerk. Their total weight was 330 kg. Malaysia’s Ari Hidayat Muhammad lifted 184 kg in his last attempt, taking his total to 331 kg and bagging the gold medal.
In weightlifting, Gyaneshwari Yadav lifted 88 kg in the third attempt (snatch category) and 111 kg in the clean and jerk category. She finished second and bagged a silver medal.
