A pilot’s BA test may sometimes show a positive result after using mouthwashes, cough syrups, homeopathic medicines etc
Mandatory tests a pilot must pass before takeoff: Serious flight accidents over past few days have raised concerns about passenger safety. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has implemented very strict rules and Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) to prevent any aircraft accidents. A small negligence of a pilot can put the lives of hundreds of passengers at risk, prompting the aviation sector has a ‘zero tolerance’ approach towards intoxication.
Let us understand about mandatory tests a pilot must undergo before take-off:
Breath Analyzer Test: Breath Analyzer(BA) Test is a mandatory alcohol screening test. Pilots and Cabin Crew in India undergo a Pre-Flight(before takeoff) and Post-Flight (after takeoff) random BA test.
Dope/ Psychoactive Substance Test: According to DGCA rules, pilots are randomly tested for narcotic and psychoactive substances such as ganja, cocaine, opioids and amphetamines.
What Action is taken against a pilot who fails a dope test ?
1. A pilot’s license is suspended for 3 months with immediate effect on upon first failure.
2. Second time failure in test results suspension of license for 3 years.
3. A pilot’s aviation license will be revoked forever if failed for third time.
According to DGCA rules the consumption of alcohol is completely prohibited for pilots at least 12 hours before any Flight Duty. It could be noted that a pilot’s BA test may sometimes show a positive result after using mouthwashes, cough syrups, homeopathic medicines, toothpaste or chewing gum which contain trace amounts of alcohol.
