Deep depression makes landfall near Kalingapatnam: Several districts of Odisha are experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall due to a deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal. The deep depression has crossed the coast near Kalingapatnam between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur late Wednesday and early Thursday.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the deep depression crossed the coast between 11pm on September 23 and 1 am on September 24. During this time the wind speed recorded 55-65kmp up to 75kmp. At 5.30 am on Thursday, the deep depression was centred over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, about 50 km west of Kalingapatnam, 80 km north-northeast of Visakhapatnam and 170 km southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha.
The system is likely to move northwestwards while maintaining its intensity for the next 12 hours. It is then expected to move north-northwestwards and gradually weaken over the following 24 hours.
According to the Nowcast warning issued by the IMD at 10 am today, light to moderate rain, thunder and lightning, with gusty winds of up to 40 kmph, are likely to occur in 20 districts of Odisha over the next three hours.
The districts likely to be affected are Sundargada, Mayurbhanj, Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Malkangiri, Puri, Khordha, Nayagada, Kataka, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Rayagada, Koraput and Kendujhar.
The weather agency has advised people in the affected districts to keep a watch on the weather for worsening conditions and plan their activities accordingly for their safety.
