Anant Chaturdashi and number 14 connection, know what does it signify: Today is auspicious festival of Anant Chaturdashi, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is celebrated on Chaturdashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. The number 14 has special significance on Anant Chaturdashi.On this auspicious day, Ganeshotsav also ends.
On the occasion of Anant Chaturdashi devotees worship lord Vishnu’s infinite form ‘Anant’. Silk or cotton thread with 14 knots worshipped with vermillion or turmeric offered to lord ‘Anant’. These knots are considered to symbolize the 14 forms of Lord Vishnu. Anant sutra is tied on the arm while chanting the names of Lord Vishnu during the puja. Men wear Anant sutra on the right arm while women wear it on the left arm. This sutra with 14 knots acts as a protective shield.
14 Names of Lord Vishnu
Ananta, Rishikesh, Padmanabha, Madhava, Vaikuntha, Sridhara, Madhusudan, Vamana, Trivikrama, Keshava, Narayana, Damodar, Govinda and Rishikesh.
These 14 names are also considered to be associated with 14 worlds, including seven upper worlds and seven underworlds. For this reason, the number 14 is considered to be a symbol of the vastness of the universe and the omnipresence of Lord Vishnu.
Seven Upper Worlds are Bhuh, Bhuvah, Swah, Mahah, Janah, Tapah and Satya Lok and seven underworlds – Atal, Vital, Sutal, Talatal, Mahatal, Rasatal and Patal. In this way a total of 14 lokas are considered. According to the beliefs, worshiping Lord Vishnu properly and observing the Anant Chaturdashi fast gives eternal fruits for 14 years.
