Auto retail sales hit record, surge 31.8% YoY: India’s Automobile retail market recorded surge in sales for the month of September. Amidst the beginning of the festive season, there has been a tremendous boom in vehicle purchases across the country. The strong performance also helped the industry to record its best ever first half of a financial year.
September was a satisfactory month for the auto industry. Consumer purchases increased and sales of everything from cars to two-wheelers, electric vehicles, trucks and buses saw a boom. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), total retail sales of over 25.36 lakh vehicles were recorded in September, which is 31.82% higher than last year. The special thing is that the sales of passenger vehicles also set a new record.
According to FADA data, retail sales of vehicles totaled 25,36,920 in the country in September 2026. This figure was lower in September 2025. Thus, total auto retail sales increased by 31.82% year-on-year. Sales in September also increased by 4.69% compared to August. FADA reported that September was the best ever for five out of six major vehicle categories. Along with this, the total retail sales in the first half of the financial year 2026-27 reached 1,55,12,319 units, which is 20.77% higher on year-on-year basis.
Retail sales of passenger vehicles stood at 4,27,213 units in September. This is a sharp increase of 32.1% compared to last year. Sales in the urban market increased by 32.11% and in the rural market by 32.09%.

Retail sales of two-wheelers stood at 17,90,188 units in September, which is 33.08% higher than last year. At the same time, sales of three-wheelers stood at 1,32,570 units, registering a growth of 22.25%. The commercial vehicle segment also performed strongly. Its sales in September stood at 1,03,557 units, up 37.62% year-on-year.
According to FADA, auto dealers’ outlook for October is cautiously positive after September’s impressive figures. During the festive season, shopping on auspicious days will play an important role in determining the pace of sales.
