Sharadiya Navratri holds special significance for worshiping Goddess Durga. During these nine days, the recitation of Durga Saptashati holds special significance. Reciting it gives the seeker a sense of self-strength, mental peace and positivity. However, it is considered important to keep certain things in mind while reciting.

What is Durga Saptashati?

Durga Saptashati is a major Sanskrit religious text, which is part of the Markandeya Purana. It is also known as Devi Mahatmya and Chandi Path. This book has 13 chapters and about 700 verses, hence it is called Saptashati. It describes the glory of Goddess Durga and her victory over evil forces. However, certain precautions are considered essential while reciting, from the preparation of the pooja to the sequence of mantras and chapters. Here are the rules for reciting Durga Saptashati and the benefits of reciting it.

Clean the place of worship: Clean the place of worship before reciting Durga Saptashati at home. This allows the preparation of pooja to be done on time and there is no need to rush during the recitation.

Wear clean clothes: Take a shower and put on clean clothes before starting the lesson. In religious traditions, special attention is paid to physical cleanliness during worship. After this place a clean asan in front of the picture of Maa Durga and meditate on the Goddess.

Start with Durga Kavach: It is a tradition to recite Durga Kavach before reading Durga Saptashati. After this should be recited in the prescribed order. During the recitation keep in mind the form of Maa Durga and chant the verses with devotion.

Lit a Lamp: Light a lamp in front of a picture of Maa Durga and ensure that it does not blow out.  After the recitation, perform aarti to Maa Durga and pray for forgiveness for any mistakes made in the puja.

Bhog and Prasad: After the aarti, one can offer fruits, sweets or batasha to Maa Durga. After this, the prasad is distributed among the family members and other devotees. Pray to the Goddess for the family’s happiness and prosperity.
