D.Gukesh becomes India’s No.1 chess player , surpasses Arjun Erigaisi in live ratings . World Champion D Gukesh improved his score to 3.5 points by defeating Germany’s Vincent Kimer in the fifth round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. With his second win in the tournament, Gukesh has climbed to fourth in the world rankings based on live ratings. With this, he has surpassed his compatriot Arjun Erigaisi to become India’s top chess player.
Gukesh gained seven Elo points to take his live rating to 2784. On the other hand, India’s number one chess player, Erigaisi, lost 21.5 points to take his live rating to 2779. Earlier, Erigaisi was the only Indian player to be in the 2800 club. Erigaisi has lost three games and drawn two in the Wizz and Zee so far due to his poor form in the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. He is tied for last place in the tournament with Leon Luc Mendonca.
On the other hand, Gukesh is undefeated in the tournament with two wins and three draws. He drew against Vladimir Fedoseev and Alexey Saran. He won matches against Anish Giri and Vincent Kimer. The live ratings are expected to change and if Erigaisi returns, he could take Gukesh’s place again. The tournament will feature eight more Swiss rounds and a play-off.
Despite not participating in the tournament, Magnus Carlsen remains in first place with 2832.5 live rating points. In second place is American GM Hikaru Nakamura (2802) and in third place is Fabiano Caruana (2789).
D. Gukesh played a memorable game for India in the Chess Olympiad last year. He then defeated defending champion Ding Liren to become the world champion. He was also selected for the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
