Mata Lakshmi gave a boon to Ganesh ji that he will be worshiped before her wherever she was worshipped
Why lord Ganesha and goddess Laxmi worshipped together on Diwali?: Diwali is also known as the festival of lights. The festival is celebrated in the Amavasya tithi of Kartik month. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
On the occasion of Diwali people pray goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha for happiness and prosperity. But have you ever wondered why Laxmi-Ganesh are worshipped together. As per Hindu mythology, goddess Laxmi appeared during Samudra Manthan in Satyayuga. She is considered the goddess of wealth, splendor, good fortune and prosperity. It is believed that on the night of Diwali, Goddess Lakshmi visits the earth and resides in clean, well-lit and devout homes. So people worship Lakshmi on this day and wish for happiness and prosperity.
On the other hand the lord Ganesha is considered as the ‘first deity’, vighnaharta to be worshipped before any auspicious beginning or work. Worship is considered incomplete without their invocation.
It is believed that wealth acquired without good will is not permanent and may be misused. It can be truly meaningful and lasting only when accompanied by wisdom and righteous conduct. Hence, both are worshipped together to invoke blessings for prosperity guided by wisdom.

According to a legend, once Maa Lakshmi became a little proud of her opulence and beauty. She sought Lord Vishnu’s opinion on attaining perfection or completeness. To this Vishnu replied a woman’s life is considered incomplete until she attains the bliss of motherhood. You have no children, so you are still incomplete. Hearing this, Goddess Lakshmi went to her friend Goddess Parvati and requested her to adopt one of her son. Then Mother Parvati handed over her son Ganapati to Mother Lakshmi as an adopted son.

From that time Ganesha ji became the adopted son of Mata Lakshmi. Being extremely pleased with this, Mata Lakshmi gave a boon to Ganesh ji that he will be worshiped before her wherever she was worshipped. A person who worships me only without worshiping Lord Ganesha will never get my grace and blessings. From that time on the day of Diwali, the tradition of worshiping Lord Ganapati along with Goddess Lakshmi began.
