Jagannath Temple Tradition: Unmarried Couples Not Allowed Entry Due to Ancient Belief
Puri — India is home to countless ancient temples, each carrying its own traditions, beliefs, and mythological significance. One such long-standing tradition persists at the Jagannath Temple in Puri, where unmarried couples are not permitted to enter the temple premises. Whether they are lovers or engaged couples, entry is considered inappropriate according to temple customs.
The restriction is rooted in a popular mythological story associated with Radha Rani. According to the legend, Radha once came to Puri to have darshan of Lord Jagannath, an avatar of Lord Krishna. However, as she approached the sanctum, the priests stopped her. Radha questioned the decision, only to be told that since she was Krishna’s beloved and not his wife, she could not enter — and that even the Lord’s wives were not permitted inside the temple.
Hurt and angered by the denial, Radha Rani is believed to have cursed that no unmarried couple would ever be allowed to enter the Jagannath Temple, and that any such couple attempting to visit the temple would never find success in their love.
Since then, this tradition has been strictly observed. To this day, Puri Jagannath Temple priests and the administration uphold the rule, preventing unmarried couples from entering the temple complex. While modern visitors may find the tradition unusual, locals continue to follow it with deep faith, viewing it as an honored part of the temple’s ancient customs.
