Alex Honnold Free-Solos Taipei 101, Completes Highest and Most Dangerous Urban Climb Ever: World-renowned climber Alex Honnold has once again stunned the world by accomplishing an extraordinary feat—free-soloing Taipei 101, one of the tallest skyscrapers on Earth, without ropes, harnesses, or any safety equipment. The climb marks the highest and most dangerous free-solo ascent ever attempted in an urban environment.
Standing at 508 metres (1,667 feet) with 101 floors, Taipei 101 is an architectural icon of Taiwan’s capital city. The building’s unique design—divided into eight stacked blocks of eight floors each—presents a complex and physically demanding climbing challenge. The most difficult portion of the ascent was the central 64-storey section, where the structure’s intricate design tested balance, grip, and endurance.
Honnold began his climb early Sunday morning, a day after the original plan was postponed due to heavy rain and adverse weather conditions. Dressed in a red half-sleeved T-shirt, he climbed steadily and calmly as spectators gathered below, cheering throughout the ascent. After nearly 90 minutes, he successfully reached the summit, raising his arms in triumph as the crowd erupted in applause.
Historic Feat: Alex Honnold Becomes First to Free-Solo Taipei 101
Sharing his experience after completing the climb, Honnold said,
“The view was so amazing—unbelievable. What a beautiful day. The wind was blowing so hard that I was worried I might fall off the building. I was trying my best to maintain balance, but the sight was truly incredible. What a beautiful way to see Taipei.”
During the climb, Honnold took short rest breaks at each major section, allowing him to regain strength and maintain stability. Though he has previously completed legendary free-solo climbs—most notably El Capitan in Yosemite National Park—scaling a massive urban skyscraper without protection marks a new milestone in his career.
Taipei 101 has been climbed before. In 2004, French climber Alain Robert ascended the building on Christmas Day, using safety ropes. However, Alex Honnold is the first person to climb the structure entirely without any safety gear, setting a historic benchmark in the world of climbing.
This achievement stands not only as a triumph of physical endurance and skill but also as a symbol of human courage, precision, and the limits of possibility.
