China competes with Elon Musk’s company Neuralink. China has approved the world’s first commercial brain-computer interface (BCI). This brain chip named NEO has been developed by Neural Technology in collaboration with Tsinghua University. It is designed to help paraplegic patients regain their ability to walk. In March, China’s National Medical Products Administration granted it market authorization. On the other hand, Neuralink’s chip has yet to receive such approval.
Neuralink’s chip is surgically implanted in the brain, but NEO is a little different in this respect and that’s why it got approved so quickly. NEO has eight sensors that will be implanted on the dura mater, the brain’s protective membrane. These sensors collect brain signals and send them to the computer. The computer then converts these signals into commands and sends them to the soft robotic gloves. In this way, people who are unable to move will be able to do their daily tasks by making small movements with their hands. This chip does not need to be implanted in the brain, so there is no problem like tissue damage or bleeding. This chip can be used on people aged 18-60.
