Deadly Shooting During Final Exams at Brown University Leaves Two Dead, Eight Injured; Gunman Still at Large
Deadly Gun Attack During Exams at Brown University: 2 Dead, 8 Injured: A horrific mass shooting rocked the campus of Brown University on Tuesday, spreading fear and chaos during a crucial period of final examinations. At least two people were killed and eight others injured after a gunman opened fire near the university’s Barus and Holley Building, a major academic center for engineering and physics students.
The incident occurred while important engineering design exams were underway inside the seven-story building, which houses more than 100 laboratories and dozens of classrooms. Students and faculty were stunned as the sound of gunfire echoed through the campus, triggering panic and confusion.
According to city officials, emergency responders rushed to the scene within minutes. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, while Brown University issued an urgent campus-wide alert instructing everyone to “shelter in place.” Students and staff were told to lock doors, silence mobile phones, and hide in secure locations, as the shooter was believed to still be on the move.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, citing information from law enforcement, confirmed the casualties and urged residents living near the campus to remain indoors. Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara said the suspect is described as a man wearing dark clothing, last seen leaving the building shortly after the shooting.
There was brief confusion when authorities initially suggested a suspect had been taken into custody. That statement was later corrected, with officials confirming that no arrests have been made and the attacker remains at large. Police have since cordoned off the area and launched an extensive search, with assistance from federal agencies.
The incident was also brought to the attention of U.S. President Donald Trump, who acknowledged receiving a briefing and stated that the FBI was assisting local authorities. He expressed condolences to the victims and their families, later clarifying that the suspect has not yet been apprehended.
As the investigation continues, a heavy police presence remains on and around the Brown University campus. Classes and exams have been disrupted, and an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty hangs over the university community as students, faculty, and families pray for safety and swift justice.
