Telegram suffers setback as Delhi HC keeps interim restrictions in place
Delhi High Court extends temporary ban on Telegram until June 22: The Delhi High Court has rejected Telegram’s plea against a temporary ban imposed by the central government and refused to grant any relief. The court upheld the order issued under Section 69A of the IT Act, allowing the ban to continue until June 22.
The ban was imposed after allegations that Telegram was being used to spread leaked question papers, fake exam materials, fraud networks, and misinformation related to the NEET re-exam. Acting on a recommendation from the National Testing Agency (NTA), the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology blocked access to the platform and also ordered the disabling of the message editing feature until June 30. Telegram challenged this move, saying it affects over 15 crore users and is too extreme.
The NEET-UG 2026 exam, held on May 3 for over 23 lakh students, was later linked to paper leak reports. Investigations found similarities in leaked and actual question papers, leading to the exam being cancelled on May 12 and a re-test scheduled for June 21. A CBI probe also revealed the involvement of insiders and coaching networks, with several arrests made. Amid the controversy, authorities took strict action, including a temporary ban on Telegram.
