North India Shaken by Earthquake; Epicenter Traced to Afghanistan Region

Earthquake in Jammu & Kashmir Sends Tremors Across Delhi-NCR: Strong earthquake tremors were felt across several parts of North India on Saturday, including Delhi-NCR, Jammu and Kashmir, and Chandigarh, triggering panic among residents. In Jammu and Kashmir, two consecutive tremors left people startled, while in Delhi and Noida, office workers and residents rushed out of buildings as a precaution. Despite the widespread panic, authorities have confirmed that no major damage or casualties have been reported so far.

According to initial reports, the earthquake originated near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, with a magnitude of 5.9 recorded in Afghanistan. The tremors were strong enough to be felt across northern regions of India due to their geographical proximity and seismic sensitivity.

This marks the third time this year that earthquake tremors have been experienced in the Delhi-NCR region. Earlier incidents were recorded on January 19 with a magnitude of 2.8 and January 30 with a magnitude of 3.2, indicating a pattern of recurring seismic activity.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) classifies India into four seismic zones based on earthquake risk. Delhi falls under Zone IV, which is considered a high-risk category. Earthquakes in this zone can range between magnitudes of 6.0 and 6.9, making the region particularly vulnerable.

Experts note that Delhi’s geological structure and proximity to active fault lines contribute to frequent tremors. While most of these are mild, the recurring activity highlights the importance of preparedness and adherence to safety protocols.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm, follow safety guidelines during tremors, and ensure that buildings comply with earthquake-resistant construction standards. As seismic activity continues to be monitored, residents are advised to stay alert but not panic, as precaution and awareness remain the key to minimizing risks during such natural events.
