Election Commission Summons Cricketer Mohammed Shami for Voter List Discrepancy: Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and his younger brother, Mohammed Kaif, have been summoned by the Election Commission of India (ECI) following discrepancies found in their Special Intensive Revision (SIR) forms, according to reports. Notices were issued from Kartaju Nagar School in South Kolkata, directing both to appear before the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO).
Shami, however, could not attend the hearing on January 5 due to his ongoing participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, representing the Bengal cricket team in Rajkot. His next hearing has now been rescheduled for January 9-11, after he submitted a letter to the Election Commission explaining his unavailability.
According to sources, Shami is registered as a voter in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Ward No. 93, falling under the Rasbihari Assembly constituency. Despite being a permanent resident of Kolkata, Shami voted in his ancestral village in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. No official statements have yet been issued by Shami or the Election Commission regarding the matter.
The SIR process in West Bengal, conducted after the draft voter list was published on December 16, led to the removal of over 5.82 million names. A process of claims, objections, and hearings is currently underway to verify voter records.
Shami and his brother are expected to appear before the Election Commission on the newly scheduled dates to provide the necessary documents and clarify their citizenship and voter registration status.
