Ex- Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee found dead in party office: Former deputy speaker of West Bengal Assembly, Ashis Banerjee, was found hanging at a TMC party office in Birbhum district on Sunday morning. A purported suicide note is recovered from the party office located near his residence in Rampurhat.

According to sources, former TMC MLA Ashis Banerjee’s body was recovered from the TMC office adjacent to his residence. After getting information, a large number of party workers and local people gathered outside the office and informed the police. The circumstances surrounding his death are not clear. Police have launched an investigation, and the body has been sent for post-mortem. The exact cause of death will be clear only after the completion of the post-mortem report and investigation.

Ashis Banerjee was a five-time MLA from Rampurhat, having represented the constituency for 25 consecutive years starting in 2001. Banerjee, however, lost the seat to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Dhruba Saha in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly polls. He also served as the agricultural minister of the state from 2017 to 2021.
