In January, Keegan’s family and Newcastle said the two-time Ballon d’Or winner was being treated for cancer but did not share details about the illness. In June, Keegan confirmed that he had stage four cancer. The club released an official statement saying, ‘We are deeply saddened by the news of Kevin Keegan’s passing. He was one of the most iconic, influential and best-loved figures in our club’s history.’ The statement added that as a player, Keegan made a new mark at St James’ Park with his world-class talent, ambition and leadership. As a manager, he raised new hopes in the club and the city. His team’s aggressive style, passion and passion impressed football fans around the world.
