Goa Nightclub Fire: Cylinder Blast Claims 23 Lives; CM Sawant Orders High-Level Probe: A devastating fire at a nightclub in Arpora village, North Goa, late Saturday night (December 6, 2025) claimed the lives of at least 23 people, most of them employees of the establishment. Goa Director General of Police Alok Kumar told PTI that the blaze was triggered by a cylinder explosion inside the club. “At least 23 bodies have been recovered. The deceased included club employees,” he said, according to an ANI report.
Kumar added that while some victims succumbed to severe burns, others died due to suffocation caused by dense smoke. The large crowd inside the premises at the time of the incident made rescue operations particularly challenging. Among the deceased were 20 men and three women.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant rushed to the site shortly after receiving news of the tragedy. Calling it a “deeply tragic incident,” he assured that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted. He further stated that strict action would follow if any violations of fire or safety norms were uncovered. The Chief Minister noted that three to four tourists visiting Goa were also among the victims.
Rescue operations continued throughout the night, with fire and police teams battling intense flames and thick smoke to evacuate those trapped. Local MLA Michael Lobo said it took the entire night to bring the fire under control. In response to the tragedy, he announced that a special fire safety audit would be carried out at all nightclubs in the region to prevent similar disasters.
The incident highlights persistent weaknesses in fire safety compliance across India. Recent tragedies—including a fire in a Hyderabad building that killed 17 people, a hotel blaze in Kolkata that claimed 15 lives, and an amusement park fire in Gujarat that left 24 dead—underscore the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety protocols.
Authorities say the probe in Goa will focus on determining whether negligence or violations of safety standards contributed to Saturday night’s deadly fire.
