Husbands Must Help Their Wifes With Household Chores: Supreme Court , It is not cruelty for a woman not to do household chores like cooking. You are not marrying a maid. Times have changed. A husband has to join his wife in household chores. He has to help her. The Supreme Court has given this opinion in a divorce case on Friday.
Hearing a divorce case, Justice Sandeep Mehta said, “You are not marrying a maid, you are marrying a life partner.” The top court emphasized that times have changed and the husband also has to contribute in such matters. Similarly, Justice Vikram Nath said, “You have to contribute in cooking, washing utensils etc. Today’s times are different.”
Did the husband file a complaint?
The petitioner in the case filed a divorce case alleging that the wife’s attitude had changed just a week after the marriage and she started misbehaving with him. She even used obscene language against her in-laws, refused to cook food for them and gave birth to their child but did not even invite him to a function.
On the other hand, the wife claimed that she had gone to her parents’ house with the consent of the petitioner and his family to give birth to the child, but they did not attend the function and demanded money and gold from her parents. The family court accepted the husband’s application and granted divorce on the grounds of cruelty. Subsequently, the wife appealed to the High Court, which dismissed the divorce.
Aggrieved by this decision, the husband approached the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court, however, said this during the hearing. Earlier, the apex court had offered the parties for mediation, but it failed. The parties got married in 2017 and have an 8-year-old son. At a later date, both parties have been asked to appear in person.
