Western Disturbance Triggers Heavy Rain, Storm Alerts Across North India
IMD Issues Rain, Hailstorm Warning in North India States; A major weather shift has been recorded across India due to the combined impact of a western disturbance and an upper-air cyclonic circulation, with the strongest effects visible in North India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, and hailstorms in several states, raising concerns for public safety and agriculture.
States including Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana are under alert, with wind speeds expected to reach 50–60 kmph. These conditions could disrupt daily life and significantly increase the risk of crop damage for farmers.
In the northern hill regions, particularly Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, heavy rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is forecast, prompting an orange alert. Continuous rain and cloud cover have already been reported, while the risk of landslides in mountainous areas has also increased.
Weather Alert: 50–60 kmph Winds, Heavy Rain Likely in Multiple Regions
According to IMD, the active western disturbance over Pakistan and adjoining regions, combined with an upper-air cyclonic circulation and a strong subtropical jet stream, is creating unstable atmospheric conditions. This has led to widespread rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorms across multiple regions.
In Rajasthan, several districts including Jaipur, Ajmer, Bharatpur, Kota, and Udaipur witnessed thunderstorms, gusty winds, and rainfall. Hailstorms were also reported in Bikaner, where fields were seen covered in a white layer of hail. A fresh and stronger western disturbance is expected to impact parts of Jodhpur and Bikaner from April 6, bringing more intense weather activity.
Meanwhile, eastern regions such as West Bengal continue to experience hot and humid conditions, creating discomfort and potential health concerns. Over the past 24 hours, rainfall has been recorded in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and even southern states like Karnataka.
The weather system is also affecting South India, with heavy rainfall forecast in Kerala and Mahe. Thunderstorms and intense showers in these areas may lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
IMD has advised residents to remain cautious during this period of unstable weather. People are urged to avoid open areas during thunderstorms, stay away from trees during lightning, secure loose objects, and protect vehicles from potential hail damage. Farmers have been specifically warned to take preventive measures to minimize crop losses.
The changing weather is also expected to bring a drop of 3–5°C in temperatures across northwest India, keeping conditions cooler over the coming days. However, a gradual rise in temperature is expected later.
