India Crowned T20 World Champions After Victory Over New Zealand
India Beat New Zealand to Win T20 World Cup Trophy: The India national cricket team created history by successfully defending the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title, defeating the New Zealand national cricket team by a massive 96 runs in the 2026 final. With this emphatic victory, India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times and also the first to retain the trophy in consecutive editions, having previously won it in 2024.
Batting first after New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl, India delivered a stunning batting performance. The team piled up a huge 255 runs for the loss of five wickets, putting immense pressure on the opposition right from the start.
Openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma provided India with a blistering start. The pair added 98 runs for the first wicket, setting the tone for a big total. Abhishek played an explosive innings, scoring 52 runs off just 21 balls, including six fours and three sixes.
After Abhishek’s dismissal, Sanju Samson continued to dominate the New Zealand bowling attack. He formed a crucial 105-run partnership for the second wicket with Ishan Kishan. Samson was the standout performer, scoring a brilliant 89 runs from 45 balls, hitting five fours and eight sixes. Kishan supported him well with a quick 54 runs off 25 balls, which included four fours and four sixes.
In the final overs, India’s middle order added valuable runs to push the total even higher. All-rounder Hardik Pandya chipped in with 18 runs from 13 balls, while Shivam Dube provided a spectacular finish. Dube smashed 26 runs off just eight balls, including 24 runs in the final over, helping India reach the imposing total of 255.
Chasing such a massive target, New Zealand struggled to keep up with the required run rate. Despite their efforts, they were restricted to 159 runs, handing India a comfortable 96-run victory.
