India’s Passport Climbs Five Ranks in Henley Index 2026 as Asian Nations Dominate Global Mobility
Indian Passport Gains Strength, Visa-Free Access Expands to 55 Countries: The Henley Passport Index 2026 has highlighted notable shifts in global travel freedom, with Asian countries continuing to dominate the rankings of the world’s most powerful passports. Singapore has retained its position at the top, offering its citizens visa-free access to 192 countries, making it the most powerful passport globally.
Japan and South Korea follow closely in second place, with access to 188 destinations each. Europe continues to maintain a strong presence, while the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as one of the biggest climbers this year, reaching fifth position, reflecting its growing global influence and diplomatic outreach.
India’s Ranking Improves
India has recorded a positive jump in the 2026 index, climbing five places to rank 80th, tied with Algeria. Indian passport holders can now access 55 countries without obtaining a prior visa. This includes visa-free travel, visa-on-arrival, and Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) facilities. In comparison, India stood at 85th position last year, indicating gradual but steady improvement in passport strength.
Benefits for Indian Travellers
The improved ranking brings greater convenience for Indian travellers, particularly across Asia, Africa, Oceania, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Popular destinations offering visa-free entry to Indians include Thailand, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, Barbados, Fiji, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, among others.
Countries providing visa-on-arrival or ETA options include Indonesia, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Jordan, and the Philippines, making leisure and short-term business travel significantly easier.
