INS Mahendragiri joins Indian Navy, strengthening maritime security: The Indian Navy has achieved another breakthrough in the direction of increasing its maritime power. The indigenous stealth frigate Mahendragiri (F38) developed under Project-17A was formally commissioned into the Indian Navy on 11 July 2026 in Visakhapatnam.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh dedicated the indigenous stealth frigate Mahendragiri (F38) to the nation in the ceremony. Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Chief of Indian Navy, was also present on this occasion. The addition of Mahendragiri to the Navy will strengthen India’s maritime security and warfighting capabilities in the Indian Ocean region.
The Indian Navy on Saturday received another state-of-the-art indigenous warship. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh formally inducted INS Mahendragiri into the Indian Navy at a ceremony held at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. The defense minister was also given a guard of honor on this occasion.
INS Mahendragiri Project-17A is the sixth stealth frigate of the Nilgiri class. It was designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB), while it was built by Mumbai-based Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). It is also the fourth and final warship built by MDL under Project-17A. INS Mahendragiri uses more than 75 percent indigenous materials and technology. Many Indian companies in the country and a large number of MSMEs have contributed to its construction.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that the induction of INS Mahendragiri into the Navy is a proud moment for the country and the Indian Navy. ‘This modern warship is an excellent example of fully indigenous design and construction and a testament to India’s determination to be self-reliant and the growing capacity of the country’s defense industries and micro, small and medium enterprises,’he said.
This warship has been named after the Mahendragiri mountain range of the Eastern Ghats. This name is considered a symbol of strength, perseverance and unwavering resolve. It is the first warship of the Indian Navy to bear the name Mahendragiri. This adds a new chapter to India’s maritime heritage and also reflects the growing indigenous shipbuilding prowess of the country.
