RBI is preparing to make a major technical change in the monetary system of the country. This will help to make the cash system of the country completely safe and sustainable. Let’s understand how much it costs to print plastic notes, is it cheaper or more expensive than paper notes?

  • Polymer notes are manufactured using a special type of polypropylene plastic substrate instead of the usual cotton thread or paper.
  • These notes come with special security features, including transparent sections and holographic designs, to help prevent forgery.

Due to these advanced technologies, the initial cost of producing polymer notes is estimated to be around 2 to 3 times more expensive than normal paper notes. It means RBI spends about Re 1 to Rs 3 to print a normal paper note. While it may cost around Rs 2 to Rs 6 printing per polymer note.
