Playback Singer Kumar Sanu Moves Bombay High Court, Seeks ₹30 Lakh in Defamation Case Against Ex-Wife
Kumar Sanu Files ₹30 Lakh Defamation Suit Against Ex-Wife Rita Bhattacharya in Bombay High Court: Renowned Bollywood playback singer Kumar Sanu has filed a defamation suit against his former wife, Rita Bhattacharya, in the Bombay High Court, seeking ₹30 lakh in damages and the removal of interviews in which she allegedly made defamatory remarks against him. The matter was heard by the court on December 17, 2025.
Kumar Sanu and Rita Bhattacharya were divorced in 2001, following which both parties had entered into a consent agreement at the Bandra Family Court on February 9, 2001. The couple shares a son, Jaan Kumar Sanu, who later gained public attention after appearing on the reality show Bigg Boss 14.
According to the petition, filed through advocate Sana Rais Khan—who was also a contestant on Bigg Boss 17—Rita Bhattacharya gave multiple interviews across digital platforms in September 2025, making serious allegations against the singer. She reportedly accused Kumar Sanu of ill-treating her during pregnancy, claiming that he starved her, locked her in the kitchen, denied her milk and medical care, and initiated legal proceedings against her while she was expecting. She also alleged that the singer had multiple affairs and neglected his family.
The plea states that these interviews went viral on social media, leading to widespread circulation of the allegations and causing severe harm to Kumar Sanu’s reputation, public image, and mental well-being. The petition further argues that Rita Bhattacharya’s statements violate the explicit terms of the 2001 consent agreement, which barred both parties from making any future allegations against each other.
Following the circulation of the interviews, a legal notice dated September 27 was sent to Rita Bhattacharya as well as the media platforms that published the content, warning of criminal prosecution if the alleged defamatory material was not taken down.
The case underscores the growing legal scrutiny around viral digital content and the responsibility of individuals and media outlets in matters involving personal disputes and reputational harm. The Bombay High Court is expected to further hear the matter in the coming weeks.
