Lt Gen Virendra Vats Takes Charge as Director General of NCC, Brings 37 Years of Counter-Terrorism and Global Experience
Lieutenant General Virendra Vats takes over as Director General of National Cadet Corps (NCC): Lieutenant General Virendra Vats has officially assumed the role of Director General of the National Cadet Corps (NCC), the world’s largest uniformed youth organization. He succeeds Lieutenant General Gurbirpal Singh at a time when the NCC is expanding its cadet strength to 2 million across 28 states and 8 union territories, in alignment with the vision of a developed India by 2047.
With a distinguished military career spanning 37 years, Lt Gen Vats brings extensive experience in counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, and global peacekeeping. Commissioned into the 19 Kumaon Regiment of the Indian Army on 17 December 1988, he has served in critical roles across Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and at the Army Headquarters. Notably, he also commanded an Infantry Brigade as part of the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Under his leadership, the NCC continues to uphold its core motto of “Unity and Discipline” while embracing innovation, digital skills, and global awareness to shape responsible, patriotic youth. His appointment marks a strategic move to steer the NCC towards becoming a dynamic force in nation-building.
