Hosts Mexico booked their place in the Round of 16 after beating Ecuador 2-0 in Round of 32 match at the Azteca Stadium on Tuesday night. Mexico celebrated the first goal in the 22nd minute through Julian Quinones brilliant move. Just 9 minutes later, veteran striker Raul Jimenez scored another goal in the 31st minute to extend Mexico’s lead to 2-0.
From the opening whistle, Mexico dominated the match and continued to attack. After taking a two-goal lead in the first half, Mexico completely put Ecuador on the back foot. In the second half, Ecuador tried to mount a comeback and even gained some possession, but they couldn’t penetrate Mexico’s strong defense. Ecuador’s star player, Enner Valencia, and his team created some chances but failed to convert them into goals.
With this victory, Mexico will now face the winner of the match between England and DR Congo in the pre-quarter finals.
