The development comes amid tensions with shareholders and differences between Chandrasekaran and Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata. N Chandrasekaran’s resignation has brought an abrupt end to nearly a decade-long tenure, which transformed India’s biggest business group into a conglomerate spanning airlines, semiconductors, electronics, batteries and digital businesses.

Chandrasekaran joined the Tata group in 1987, became TCS’s CEO in 2009, and took over as Tata Sons chair in 2017. Chandrasekaran had discussed with close associates the possibility of stepping down ahead of an August 18 annual general meeting where Tata Sons shareholders are set to vote on his reappointment. N Chandra’s current tenure ends in February 2027, and he will not be seeking re-appointment, sources said.
