Nana patekar was born on 1 January, 1951 in Murud- Janjira, Maharashtra. His real name is Vishwanath Gajanan Patekar. He studied at Mumbai’s Sir J.J. School of Art and Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art, earning a diploma in applied art. He began acting in plays while still in school. Nana Patekar began his career in Marathi theatre before transitioning to cinema.
Before entering the acting field, Patekar worked as a commercial painter and artist. At the age of 13, financial hardships forced him to work. He used to paint film posters in Mumbai and reportedly earned about Rs 35 per month. He also worked as a calligrapher and painted zebra crossings to make a living.

He got his breakthrough with N. Chandra’s Ankush(1986), establishing him as a promising talent in Bollywood and highlighting his charm and versatility globally. After that he didn’t look behind. Patekar delivered several iconic performances in films such as Krantiveer, Ab Tak Chhappan, Prahaar: The Final Attack, Parinda, Agni Sakshi, Taxi No. 9211, Welcome, Rajneeti and many others.
He has received three National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards and two Maharashtra State Film Awards for his acting performances. He was also awarded the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to cinema and the arts. Although widely recognised for his Hindi films, Patekar remained closely associated with Marathi cinema and theatre. His work in Marathi films included Natsamrat, Aapla Maanus, and Natsamrat, among other projects.
