Neeraj Ghaywan’s ‘Homebound’ Enters Oscars 2026 Top 15, Brings India Closer to Final Nomination: Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor starrer Homebound has taken a significant step forward in the Oscars 2026 race. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan, the film has been shortlisted in the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards. India’s official entry now stands among the top 15 films, out of which only five will secure final nominations.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released shortlists for 12 categories on Tuesday, bringing a wave of excitement across the Indian film industry as Homebound found a place among the elite selections. The final nominations will be announced on January 22, keeping hopes high for the film’s historic Oscar run.
Producer Karan Johar expressed immense joy and emotion over the achievement. Sharing the film’s poster on social media, he described the journey as difficult to put into words. Johar called the transition from the Cannes Film Festival premiere to the Oscars shortlist one of the most special moments of his career. He also praised director Neeraj Ghaywan and thanked the entire cast and crew for their dedication.
Director Neeraj Ghaywan also shared his happiness, stating that the global love received by Homebound has been its greatest strength. He emphasized that the film is not just a story but a reflection of countless young people striving to achieve their dreams while navigating societal and systemic challenges.
About the Film
Homebound follows the journey of two childhood friends, Shoaib and Chandan, who aspire to become police officers. Their dreams, however, are repeatedly challenged by social discrimination, financial hardships, and the rigid structure of the system. The film poignantly explores themes of friendship, duty, ambition, and the pressures faced by India’s youth.
The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and later received widespread appreciation at the Toronto International Film Festival, further strengthening its international presence. Backed by producers Karan Johar, Aadar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Soman Mishra, the film also boasts legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese as its executive producer.
Currently streaming on Netflix, Homebound represents India’s strong footprint on the global cinematic stage. With the final Oscar nominations set to be announced on January 22, all eyes are now on whether the film will make it to the final five and script history for Indian cinema.
