PM Modi Accuses Congress of Neglecting Assam, Targets Trinamool Over Infiltration and ‘Jungle Raj’
PM Modi Accuses Opposition of Protecting Infiltrators, Recalls Plot to Separate Assam: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, accusing it of neglecting Assam and the Northeast for decades, and claimed that the BJP-led government is now correcting the mistakes of the past.
Addressing a rally in Guwahati after inaugurating the new terminal of Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, the Prime Minister revisited historical events to criticise the Congress. He alleged that prior to Independence, when the British and the Muslim League were planning the partition of India, there was a conspiracy to merge Assam with East Pakistan. Modi said that Congress was close to becoming part of this conspiracy, but Gopinath Bordoloi stood firmly against his own party and safeguarded Assam’s identity, ensuring it remained an integral part of India.
The Prime Minister said that the development of Assam and the Northeast was never a priority for the Congress, accusing it of patronising infiltrators who encroached upon forests and land, posing a threat to the region’s security and cultural identity. He asserted that under the BJP’s “double-engine government,” development in Assam is progressing smoothly and continuously, comparing it to the uninterrupted flow of the Brahmaputra River.
Modi also spoke about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists initiated by the Election Commission, stating that it aims to ensure infiltrators are excluded from the electoral process. He said the Centre is taking strict steps to curb infiltration, while alleging that opposition parties are attempting to shield infiltrators. Despite Supreme Court orders, he claimed, opposition leaders and lawyers are defending them, which he described as an “anti-national mindset” that could disturb peace in the state.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister strongly criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government while addressing the BJP’s ‘Parivartan Sankalp Jansabha’ at Taherpur in West Bengal’s Nadia district, which he addressed virtually due to dense fog preventing his helicopter from landing. Modi said the time had come to free Bengal from “jungle raj,” drawing parallels with Bihar, where voters had rejected such politics in favour of development.
He alleged that the Trinamool government was opposing the SIR to protect infiltrators and claimed they enjoyed open support in the state. Referring to posters saying “Go Back Modi,” he remarked that it would have been better if slogans demanding infiltrators to leave were displayed instead.
In a post on Instagram later in the evening, Modi assured the Matua and Namasudra communities that they have the right to live with dignity in India under the Citizenship Amendment Act, stating that their presence in the country is not dependent on the Trinamool Congress.
During his visit to Assam, the Prime Minister inaugurated the country’s first nature-themed airport terminal at Guwahati, built at a cost of ₹4,000 crore, and unveiled an 80-foot-tall statue of Gopinath Bordoloi. In Kolkata, he also virtually inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects worth ₹3,200 crore, including highway expansion works.
Modi concluded by reiterating his commitment to the development of Assam, the Northeast, and West Bengal, urging people to remain united and vigilant against what he termed divisive and anti-national forces.
