Sonam Wangchuk to end hunger strike, lays down 3 conditions: Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk has announced to end his hunger strike. A letter has been shared on his social media handle on Monday (July 20), in which three conditions have been laid down. Wangchuk says that he will end the hunger strike if any of these conditions are met.
According to Wangchuk, he will end his hunger strike if:
1. The government accepts accountability for recent failures in the education system, including paper leaks.
2. He and the leadership of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) are allowed to reach Parliament, where MPs and leaders from different political parties assure them that the issue of education accountability will be taken up during the Monsoon Session.
3. If his health or other circumstances do not allow him to continue, MPs and leaders from different parties visit him at Safdarjung Hospital and give the same assurance.
Wangchuk also alleged that he was under ‘illegal detention’ at Safdarjung Hospital. ‘…From the illegal detention at Safdarjung Hospital, where my freedom of movement, speech and all communication are RESTRICTED,’ he said.
The issue of Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike has now reached the Delhi High Court. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed regarding the deteriorating health of Wangchuk, who has been fasting at Jantar Mantar for about two and a half weeks. In this, the court has been demanded to intervene immediately to save his life. Along with this, a big question has also arisen whether a court can order the end of hunger strike or forced treatment of a person?
Advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini has filed this PIL in the Delhi High Court. The petition seeks directions to the central government, Delhi government and concerned authorities to provide immediate medical assistance to Sonam Wangchuk, take necessary steps to save his life and initiate dialogue on the issues raised by him.
